Can God speak to me through a Disney princess? He certainly never speaks to me through a burning bush, as he did for Moses. God hasn’t audibly called my name in the night as he did young Samuel. It seems that Old Testament folk had direct access to the perceptible words of God in ways that I don’t see or experience today. Yet, I know that He longs to communicate with His children still today. John 10:27 states, “My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me.” (NIV)

I may not hear God speak aloud. However, I know that He is guiding me, leading me, and patiently waiting for me to respond to His call and direction. Even so, I have been asking God to make His will for my life clear and begging Him to plainly show me direction. Therefore, since I am open to His instruction, when I receive the same message from many sources, I know I need to listen. Even if one of those sources is a Disney princess in an animated movie.

Anna in Frozen 2 realizes that she must push forward, concentrating on each new step, as she wanders through grief. Of course, the Disney Company is not offering me advice from a biblical perspective. However, the same words have come to me from too many sources to ignore, including my daily devotions. For example, this quote from one of the online devotionals I subscribe to caught my attention:

“Do the right things for the right reasons, and trust God with the results.”—Danna Demetre, Walking With God Through Our Body Battles, Proverbs 31 Ministries.

As I plan for the future and how I will navigate the post-parenting years, I can become paralyzed with doubt and fear. Am I equipped to learn something new, take on unfamiliar challenges, and step out in faith to strive for fresh goals?

The future can seem overwhelming when I look at the broad picture. However, the message that keeps coming to me is that I don’t have to fully understand the endpoint God has in store for me. I just have to take the next step, or “do the next right thing.”

Philippians 3:12 states, “…Not that I have already arrived at my goal, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me.” (NIV) I can’t do it all, but I can do that one next step.

Our Heavenly Father can make his voice known through many avenues, even through the words of an animated cartoon character. And I know they are from Him when those words encourage me to keep taking one step further in my walk with my Lord and Savior.

Dear Lord, help me to be receptive to hearing your voice wherever I may be. Please grant me the discernment to know when a word comes from you, and to discard the lies or falsehoods that come from other sources. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

Have you been wondering if God is speaking to you in the here and now? Do you seek to keep your heart primed and your ears open to hear His voice? Check back on Monday, February 3rd to ponder how to Make Prayer a True Conversation.

    1. Hi, Carrie!
I’m glad God knows I need to hear a message more than once! And why is something so simple, such as the idea to take a journey just one step at a time, sometimes so hard to understand in my heart and in my head? I am so glad we are on this journey together, friend!

  1. Kristen, I have had this experience too…well, maybe not with a Disney princess, but with God giving me a message in many ways, many times, and from unexpected sources. 🙂
