Maundy Thursday is the day we commemorate the Last Supper, the meal Jesus shared with his disciples in the few short hours before his journey to the cross. Jesus spent those last hours with his beloved disciples the same way he had spent his life. In love, in service, in teaching, and in prayer.

Our King as Servant

“Jesus got up from the meal, took off his outer clothing, and wrapped a towel around his waist. After that, he poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel that was wrapped around him. John 13:4-5 (NIV)

The Last Supper

While they were eating, Jesus took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take and eat; this is my body.”

“Then he took a cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, ‘Drink from it, all of you. This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins. I tell you, I will not drink from this fruit of the vine from now on until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father’s kingdom.’” Matthew 26:26-27 (NIV)

Jesus Offers Comfort and Hope

Our precious Savior, the King of Kings, knew he was about to be betrayed. One of his inner circle would deliver Jesus into the hands of those who would put him to death. Furthermore, one of Jesus’s closest friends would deny even knowing him. Jesus was fully aware of the failures and shortcomings of those gathered around him. Yet, he took this time to offer them comfort and eternal hope.

“Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me. My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am.  John 14:1-3 (NIV)

Jesus Prayed for Us

“I am praying not only for these disciples but also for all who will ever believe in me through their message. I pray that they will all be one, just as you and I are one—as you are in me, Father, and I am in you. And may they be in us so that the world will believe you sent me.” John 17:20-21 (NLT)

Dear Heavenly Father, thank you for sending your Son to bring us salvation. I pray that we, as Christians, will reflect your love and glorify you through our lives. Amen.

  1. Happy holy week and happy Easter. Weird. No church and no family for dinner.
